Lets say you want BOB to find out about the game you are developing. You need a marketing campaign aimed at him and for the word to spread around but your marketing budget is minuscule, so tiny you can hardly see it….so, how do you go about solving this problem? BOB is a bit of a geek, and he discovered the joy of social networking recently, he has a Facebook account, he uses Twitter every 3 hours or so and he regularly updates his YouTube channel…BOB is there and he likes it!
Social media marketing is a very powerful tool, a winning strategy that can generate an enormous amount of traffic and interest in a game by using social networking sites consistently and creating viral content. The attraction of this kind of marketing is the low-cost , no other marketing method is as potent. Originally gaming marketing used traditional ways to propagate a message ; paper, podcasts, blogs, and more, all of which are very effective but can be costly, so where are we to concentrate our efforts and resources to market a game successfully? Probably the best option would be to use them all but this is not always possible, especially for small independent game development companies. Sit down before you start and think about what are your hopes and dreams for the game you are making. Targeting the correct audience is very important, focus on them. KNOW YOUR GAMERS!
If you are developing an online game aimed at BOB then you should really communicate online with him using very targeted websites, forums, social networking platform and blogs that BOB uses every day . BOB will notice you , he will come back to your site and… :
” HOLY MOLY!…THIS IS THE GAME I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR ALL MY LIFE!
WANT NOW!”
